Writing journal articles workshop series

Session 1: The Abstract 10.00am - 11.00

This workshop is the first in a series of five workshop sessions led by Professor Vikki Boliver and Dr Clare Gartland. The workshops will support NERUPI members in sharing and disseminating their research and evaluation around their vital work in WP and social justice.

The aim of these sessions is to demystify journal article writing. To this end, we will take each section of a journal article in turn, identify its key ingredients, and use this knowledge to help you build your article. The second aim of these sessions is to help make the difficult job of writing easier. Some of these difficulties are practical ones, such as finding the time in your busy schedule to write. Others are more psychological, such as feeling unsure about what to write or afraid that what you write will be judged as not good enough. If these difficulties resonate with you, rest assured that you are not alone! We will share tips and tricks for overcoming both the practical and psychological obstacles to writing.

The first session will focus on drafting an abstract as this is a great way to get started on your article. You might think that the abstract is the last thing you need to write, after you have finished your manuscript and know exactly what you ended up writing. But there are lots of benefits to drafting your abstract at the outset. Drafting your abstract now will help you to clarify the core aims of your article as well as help you remember what you are trying to achieve.

Writing time 11.00am -12.00pm

The workshop will be followed by a scheduled one hour session where participants can discuss their plans with other participants and start writing!
